Blunders in translation by companies


Language translation is a tricky process which involves an important consideration-culture. Culture affects everything we do. Similarly culture has a great impact in business promotions in the global world. Often companies do blunders in translation by ignoring the aspect of culture. As an individual, business or any organization, one should research everything from the symbols, colours and words of the target consumer before finalising the name, tagline, packaging and marketing campaign in their native language. There are several examples where world’s famous businesses and companies have messed up with the translations. Here are some of them:
KFC
When KFC translated ‘Finger-Likin’ Good’ in Chinese language, it was translated in Chinese as ‘We will Eat your Fingers fast’.


Cocoa Cola
Similarly Coca Cola’s name in Chinese language was read as ‘bite the wax tadpole’.

Pepsi
When Pepsi translated its marketing campaign, it was read as ‘we bring your ancestors back from the dead’ in china.

General Motors
In Europe, GM motors created a blunder by translating its campaign ‘every car has a body’ into ‘every car has a corpse’ in Spanish language.


Schweppes Tonic water
Scweppes Tonic water was translated into Italian language as Schweppes ‘Toilet paper’.





We often have a misconception that Spanish and Italian are inter-related. Unfortunately it is not. An Italian mineral company, Traficante translated their product for native Spanish speakers. Traficante means ‘drug dealer’ in Spanish language. Similarly, Irish Mist, did not succeed with its translations in German language as ‘Mist’ in German means ‘dung’.

French translations have also created blunders due to the pronunciations. Toyota launched MR2 for French which sounded somewhat close to ‘merde’


Companies should consider the cultural aspect while marketing their products for foreign customers.When pampers launched their product for Japanese market, they showed a stork delivering baby which did not suit Japanese consumers. According to a Japanese folklore, babies are delivered by floating peach and not by stork!

Distribution of Linguistics in the US


United States or America as it is popularly known as is a Federal State. It consists of fifty states and a federal district. Out of the fifty states, 43 states have predominantly Spanish speaking people. But can we really know which language is spoken majorly in each state? The answer is yes!

Recently, the American Community Survey published a data representing the distribution of languages spoken in entire United States other than English and Spanish.According to the data it is evident that there are only 7 states in the US where Spanish is not spoken as the native language. For Example French language is spoken as the first language in Louisiana, Vermont, Maine and New Hampshire German is spoken in North Dakota, Italian language is spoken in New Jersey and Pennsylvania,Yupik in Alaska, Tagalog is spoken in California and Nevada, Vietnamese is spoken in Texas, French Creole in Florida, Korean in Georgia,German in Utah and Colorado, German in Montana, Vietnamese in Washington. American Community Survey also came out with maps showing the distribution of Native American language,Indo-Aryan language, African language and Scandinavian language in each state.

The map given above shows the distribution of various languages across United States. It clearly signifies that Spanish is not the first language of most of the US states. All the maps individually create an interesting and rich portrait of the linguistic and cultural character of the United Nations.

Localization and translation of Italian recipes?

We all are aware about language translation and localization services. Have you heard about localization of recipes? Yes, many of us do not know that food also gets localized! Localization of foods is done to meet the requirements of target consumers.In this process the recipe undergoes some changes according to the palate of the target consumers.For example, In India, McDonald conceptualized “McAlooTikki” so as to localize the concept of burger for vegetarian consumers.This concept was welcomed by veg foodies and was responsible for successful value for money platform for McDonald over the years.

Let us talk about Italian food. Why do recipes get localized at different places?

·     Localization of food is done to meet the palate requirements of the target consumers. Italian pizza was  localized to suit the Indian consumers who loved thick pizza loaded with cottage cheese in different Indian  masala flavors. So the original flavors of any country may not be represented in its localized form.

·        Lack of ingredients: Many times, original blend of ingredients are not available in a particular country or are expensive, which makes the original recipe to include ingredients which are easily available in the target country.
